School-Aged Children

Just because your child is learning to read, or is an independent reader, does not mean that the benefits of regularly reading aloud to them are not felt. In fact, there are several reasons that parents should read aloud to their older children.

K - 4th Grade

  This is a list of suggested novels to real aloud to elementary school aged children.

1st Grade - 8th Grade

• Children's Book Council: Children's Choices
  This webpage contains the winners of the "Children's Choices" of favorite books each year and they are separated into three separate age groups: Ages 5 - 7, Ages 8 - 10, and Ages 11 - 13. (Go to Children's Choices Booklists for past years' lists)
• The Read Aloud Registry
  Although this website is intended to help teachers to locate good books to read aloud in the classroom, this can also be a great resource for parents selecting read aloud books. The site lists recommended read aloud titles by grade level for grades one through eight.

4th Grade - 8th Grade

• Suggested Books to Read Aloud to Middle Schoolers and Preteens
  This is an annotated bibliography of read aloud books for the older listener.
• Madame Esme's Read Aloud Resuscitation!
  This is a recommended list of good read alouds for children in grade four through eight.

8th Grade - 12th Grade

• Read All About It! Great Read-Aloud Stories, Poems, and Newspaper Pieces for Preteens and Teens, by Jim Trelease
  This link allows you to learn a little about the book, and possibly purchase it from Amazon.com. However, don't forget that you can also get this book at your local public library (if they don't have it they can get it for you via Inter–Library Loan).
